I recently read this book.
The book is written by a journalist, and reads very quick and easy. It tells the stories of several different Arab-American's between the late 1950's all the way up to post 9/11. It really provides a wide scope of people (athletes, soldiers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, gays, Republicans, Democrats, etc.), all of which happen to be of Arab descent, but American citizens.
After reading the book, I watched the documentary Persons of Interest, which tells the story of Arab's living in America who were profiled and detained post 9/11.
I would definitely recommend reading this book and watching this film to gain an understanding of the xenophobia and racism that is going on in our country. It's easy to look back at Japanese internment camps during World War II and say how wrong they are, but it's a lot harder to assess and comprehend our current mistreatment of other races as it is unfolding right now in America.
If anyone's interested, I'd be willing to lend out the book.
Since you arent on Facebook, you didn't see my posting of Tim Wise on the topic of white priviledge. youtube that shit. I saw a 50 minute lecture of his and it was amazing. Its along the lines of what youre talking about, only more broadly and applied to all races (from white people).
